Hannaford Bros. Co. held a telephone press conference yesterday to announce that they’re spending “millions” to upgrade their security after their security breach earlier this year.

If you’ve been living under a rock, you may not have heard that if you shopped at one of 294 Hannaford Supermarkets with a credit card between December 7, 2007 and March 10, 2008, you need to be aware that your credit card number was likely exposed to criminals. The criminals had installed malware on the supermarket’s servers to steal the information.

I’d like to say that it’s never too late to start concentrating on securing your customer’s credit card information, but sometimes it is too late. Better late than never is still a good concept, however.

On another note, yesterday PriceWaterhouseCoopers released their 2008 security breach survey results. Looking at the summary, there is obviously more money being spent on security than previous years, and more information security training is occuring.

However, I believe that the huge increase in information being put onto computers and the huge increase in the number and scale of security attacks has us lagging far behind where we need to be.
